Through the exploration of the sciences: biology, geology, geography, abstract mark making, and digital visual culture, my work develops conceptually and visually and tries to contextualize the world around me. Formally installation work explores the idea of dependence, and the shifting of space created when unnatural symbiotic relationships are formed between creation and the space it occupies temporarily. Drawings explore new narratives of population, density, growth and decay eluding to the world that they draw shape, color, and meaning. Through these investigations I try and create new narratives of of these relationships in my work.
Reading Response | Of other Spaces : Utopias and Heterotopias
“The experience of the world is less that of a long life developing through
time than that of a network that connects points and intersects with its own
skein.” This quote summarizes much of the concerns that people have with
space and their place within these systems. Foucault is breaking down the sanctioning of space in the contemporary setting demonstrating that the major
concerns of now revolve around the de-sanctification of space, more importantly he is introducing the concept of the heterotopias, spaces with layers of meaning that are not reviled as obviously as spaces before their time that had obvious mean. Foucault begins the break down the principles of the heterotopias. Interestingly using cemeteries, as they have had an evolution of space in direct coloration with history and thought. They were at one point direct connections to the city because of placement and social value but as history shows the development of “individualization of death and the bourgeois” death becomes associated with illness and thus moves to the margins of the city where “each family possesses its dark resting place. Another way in which a utopia functions is in juxtaposing a single space. My interest in installation art makes me care of what Foucault has to say on the issue because there is a great interest in the disruption of perceived space and how it should function and its this investigation that my work tries to function in.
